While technically not a lace, Madras, a very fine light weight leno weave, is one of the most luxurious sheer fabrics ever woven. Scotland has been producing the highest quality Madras on the 14 point Nottingham looms for over 100 years.
The Gleneagle Madras pattern is one of a kind. The design is woven into the ground by a jaquard mechanism, leaving some of the weft yarn floating between the pattern. This weft yarn is then removed by passing the cloth through a clipping machine, leaving the pattern outline on the very fine background cloth.
It takes a skilled weaver one full day to produce approximately 10 yards of Madras. To cater for today’s discerning tastes the looms have been specialized to allow our design team the flexibility to create Madras in any variety of colour and yarn combinations.
